What is a shell account?

A shell account is a personal account that gives a user access to a
Unix / Linux shell on a remote server, usually accessed through SSH or
FTP (and Telnet in the old days). A shell account can be used for many
different purposes because many different programs can be run on the
shell. It might be used to try out another operating system, running IRC
clients or bots, compile and run source codes and scripts, to host
websites, or to use e-mail services.
It might be possible to run
programs on the server even while not connected, using background jobs
or programs such as the GNU screen terminal multiplexer.

Most servers have policies in place on the accounts that limit different
kind of resources, like disk usage (Disk quota) or processes.

On some free shell accounts services, if you don't login for a long
period of time, your account may get automatically deleted. Free shell
account services often do not allow background processes.

Using Your Shell:

To access your shell on shells.shinga.co.za we suggest that you use
PuTTY if you are going to SSH in or WinSCP for s/ftp access.

PuTTY is a terminal emulator application which can act as a client for
the SSH, Telnet, rlogin, and raw TCP computing protocols.

Secure Shell or SSH is a network protocol that allows data to be
exchanged using a secure channel between two computers. Used primarily
on Linux and Unix based systems to access shell accounts, SSH was
designed as a replacement for Telnet and other insecure remote shells,
which sent information, notably passwords, in plaintext, making it
possible to intercept. The Encryption SSH use provides confidentiality
and integrity of data over an insecure network, such as the Internet.

WinSCP (Windows Secure copy) is an open source SFTP and FTP client for
Microsoft Windows. Its main function is secure file transfer between a
local and a remote computer. Beyond this, WinSCP offers basic file
manager functionality. For secure transfers, it uses Secure Shell (SSH)
and supports the legacy SCP protocol in addition to SFTP.WinSCP is based
on the implementation of the SSH protocol from PuTTY and FTP protocol
from FileZilla.

When your shell account is activated, you should receive information
which includes the hostname of the shell and hostname of the FTP server
(although the FTP server often has the same hostname as the shell). The
first thing you will want to do is SSH to the shell. Load up your SSH
client, and enter the address of the shell (e.g. shells.shinga.co.za).
You will be prompted for your username/password. After that, a Message
Of The Day (MOTD) will usually be displayed, and then you will be
staring at something that looks (and works) very similarly to a command
prompt.
